Director, Data Science Minor
Dr. Arko Barman is an Associate Professor (Teaching) at the Center for Transforming Data to Knowledge a.k.a. D2K Lab with joint appointments in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering & Statistics. Dr. Barman’s research interests include AI for Biomedicine, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Medical Image Analysis, and Natural Language Processing. He has been involved in curriculum design and has taught a diverse range of courses at different levels – from undergraduate to postdoctoral. Dr. Barman is also actively engaged in research on developing and implementing novel pedagogical techniques and teaching methods in the classroom. He was awarded the Curriculum Innovation Award at Rice University in recognition of his novel teaching and pedagogical approaches in the classroom and beyond.
Dr. Barman was a postdoctoral researcher for two years at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), where he received the first Postdoctoral Service Award and the Excellence in Teaching Award. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Houston in 2018, his Masters in Signal Processing from the Indian Institute of Science in 2011, and his Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from Jadavpur University, India, in 2009.
Teaching
Dr. Barman has taught and developed curriculum for a wide range of courses at all levels – from undergraduate to postdoctoral. He has been involved in teaching both lecture-style and project-focused courses. Dr. Barman is a proponent of active learning and widely implements active learning and experiential learning methods while teaching.
Research
Dr. Barman’s research lies broadly in the areas of AI for Biomedicine, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Medical Image Analysis, and Natural Language Processing. Recently, his research has focused on bridging the gap between computing and other domains such as social sciences, paleontology, and ecology by applying AI/ML to problems in these domains.
Rice D2K Lab
Dr. Barman is an Associate Professor (Teaching) of AI and Data Science at the Center for Transforming Data to Knowledge (D2K Lab). The Rice D2K Lab is a hub for data science education, providing students with engagement, enrichment, and experiential learning opportunities by connecting them with real-world data science challenges from companies, community organizations and researchers.
