Arko Barman

Dr. Arko Barman is an Assistant Teaching Professor at the Center for Transforming Data to Knowledge a.k.a. D2K Lab with a joint appointment at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Barman’s research interests include Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Medical Image Computing, Data Mining, and Heuristic Optimization Algorithms. He has been involved in curriculum design and has taught a diverse range of courses at different levels – from undergraduate to postdoctoral.

Dr. Barman was a postdoctoral researcher for two years at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), where he received the first Postdoctoral Service Award and the Excellence in Teaching Award. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Houston in 2018, his Masters in Signal Processing from the Indian Institute of Science in 2011, and his Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from Jadavpur University, India, in 2009.

 Teaching

Dr. Barman has taught and developed curriculum for a wide range of courses at all levels – from undergraduate to postdoctoral. He has been involved in teaching both lecture-style and project-focused courses. Dr. Barman is a proponent of active learning and widely implements active learning and experiential learning methods while teaching.

Research

Dr. Barman’s research lies broadly in the areas of machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, biomedical image analysis, and heuristic optimization algorithms. Recently, his research has focused on bridging the gap between computing and social sciences by applying machine learning to problems in sociology and political science.

Rice D2K Lab

Dr. Barman is an Assistant Teaching Professor of the Center for Transforming Data to Knowledge (D2K Lab). The Rice D2K Lab is a hub for data science education, providing students with engagement, enrichment, and experiential learning opportunities by connecting them with real-world data science challenges from companies, community organizations and researchers.
